Embracing The Journey - Navigating the Ups and Downs of Nomad Life
Louise Lambert
Life as a digital nomad is undoubbtedly an exhilarating adventure, full of new experiences and opportunities. However, it’s not always sunshine and roses, it also presents unique challenges that can sometimes feel daunting. Here’s how you can embrace the journey and tackle common, sometimes unexpected, hurdles that you will encounter along the way.
Combating Loneliness
Loneliness is a common concern for many digital nomads. Staying connected is key. Schedule regular video calls with family and friends to catch up on all the latest happenings. If you crave in-person interactions make connections, join online nomad groups to organise meet-ups or visit local co-working spaces. Being proactive in social settings, such as hostels, can also help you find like-minded individuals to share your journey with.
Managing Finances Wisely
Running out of money while traveling is a fear that can hold many people back. The best piece of advice I can give you is, ensure you have an emergency fund in place. This safety net is kept in a separate account, it is literally you last resort, it should always be enough to get you home in the absolute worse case scenario situation. On top of that have a savings nest egg that will help you weather any unexpected high bills, nagivage any downturns in work or allow you to splash out occasionally on an activity you really want to do. Diversifying your income sources is also wise - having multiple clients or revenue streams reduces the risk of losing all your income at once. for example I know of some boat dwellers (like us) who teach English online but also have hairdressing skills and often have a ready line of willing customers when they are in port, this gives them a useful cash top up regularly.
Dealing with Illness on the Road
Getting sick while traveling is never fun, but it’s important to be prepared. Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance that not only covers medical treatment abroad but also will get you home if needed. Beyond that try to avoid taking silly risks, carry a first aid kit and don’t hesitate to seek medical advice when needed. I used to worry about seeking medical advice in a foreign land but actually every doctor I've met speaks excellent English and even if they don't language barriers can be overcome with tools like Google Translate, ensuring you get the care you need without stress.
Handling Travel Safety Concerns
Safety is a top priority for any traveler. While travel in foreign places, where you don't necessarily know the lay of the land, inherently involves some risk, informed precautions can significantly mitigate these. Research as much as you can before you go exploring, make sure you understand local customs and if possible ask other travelers or locals about places to be avoided. Limit the amount of cash you carry, and keep it in multiple places if possible, if the worst happens hopefully you won't lose it all. Consider carrying dummy bank cards to deter theft too. That being said I've always felt safer overseas than I did in the UK so don't be too concerned, remember to always trust your instincts and avoid unnecessary risks - your gut feeling is a powerful tool in unfamiliar settings.
Accepting the Unknown
Travel isn’t for everyone, and it’s okay to decide it's not for you after giving it a shot. The journey may include unexpected bumps, but the only true regret is not trying at all. Embrace each moment of your adventure, and remember that you’re not alone in facing these challenges.
